SUMMARY:"Landmarks & Legacies" Photo Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area has opened its annual photo contest after a two-year hiatus – and there are new twists.“We’ve had so many great entries in past years that we wanted to offer our local photographers something new\,” said MSNHA Program Director Jessie Johnson. “We hope these changes— adding the theme ‘Landmarks & Legacies\,’ emphasizing creativity and giving photographers a long window of opportunity — will get our entrants excited about going in a different direction. We’re especially delighted to connect this year’s photo contest with America250\, the initiative to celebrate and commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial.”In addition\, winning and other selected submissions will be featured in an exhibit co-hosted by Florence Arts and Museums\, Oct. 12-Nov. 13.Entries can be submitted digitally at MSNHA’s website\, https://msnha.una.edu/. Deadline is Friday\, Aug. 28. Photos must be taken within the past 18 months in one of MSNHA’s six counties (Colbert\, Franklin\, Lauderdale\, Lawrence\, Limestone and Morgan). Guidelines and the submission form are at https://msnha.una.edu/.“We wanted our theme to be dynamic and flexible enough to inspire creativity. We also wanted to help entrants share their stories of meaningful places and people\,” Johnson said. “Even though Alabama was not a state 250 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was signed\, we hope our entrants can capture the spirit of America’s beginnings through this year’s ‘Landmarks and Legacy’ theme. We can’t wait to see the results!”Questions? Email msnha@una.edu.

SUMMARY:Battle of Fort Charlotte
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Fort Condé\, in collaboration with the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute\, is proud to present “The Battle of Fort Charlotte”! In recognition of the only battle from the American Revolution to occur in Mobile\, we invite guests to partake in a unique living history event about the battle between Great Britain and Spain for control of Mobile.  \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, March 14th\, guests are invited to witness the actual battle told from the point of view of the British and Spanish officers and soldiers in and around Fort Charlotte. The reenactment by our own living history interpreters and other groups from the Granaderos y Damas de Gálvez\, Waldeck 3rd Regiment\, Ewalds Jaeger Co.\, Gulf Coast Artillery\, and other reenactment groups from the Southeast will take place at 1:00pm at Fort Condé and will last around 45 minutes. Guests will be able to interact with the living history interpreters before and after the reenactment between 9:00am – 5:00pm.  \n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to be joined by Dennis Carlos\, an accomplished artist\, historian\, and living history reenactor with over two decades of experience\, who will play the role of Bernardo de Gálvez and show how his actions and Spain’s contributions helped America succeed in becoming an independent nation. The role of Spain in the birth of the United States is a little known and little understood aspect of U.S. independence. Gálvez is best remembered for his victory at Pensacola that aided the American war effort and made him a hero to both Spain and the newly independent United States. He was officially recognized by George Washington and the United States Congress for his aid during the American Revolution.  \n\n\n\nAdmission to Colonial Fort Condé and the reenactment is free! Attendees are encouraged to wear colonial-era clothing to enhance the authenticity of the event and deepen their engagement with the experience. PLEASE NOTE: Gun and cannon fire will occur as part of this event. Attendees with hearing sensitivities are encouraged to bring appropriate hearing protection. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Kyle Williams\, Curator of Living History: k.williams@historymuseumofmobile or 251-544-5480.
