DESCRIPTION:The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area has opened its annual photo contest after a two-year hiatus – and there are new twists.“We’ve had so many great entries in past years that we wanted to offer our local photographers something new\,” said MSNHA Program Director Jessie Johnson. “We hope these changes— adding the theme ‘Landmarks & Legacies\,’ emphasizing creativity and giving photographers a long window of opportunity — will get our entrants excited about going in a different direction. We’re especially delighted to connect this year’s photo contest with America250\, the initiative to celebrate and commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial.”In addition\, winning and other selected submissions will be featured in an exhibit co-hosted by Florence Arts and Museums\, Oct. 12-Nov. 13.Entries can be submitted digitally at MSNHA’s website\, https://msnha.una.edu/. Deadline is Friday\, Aug. 28. Photos must be taken within the past 18 months in one of MSNHA’s six counties (Colbert\, Franklin\, Lauderdale\, Lawrence\, Limestone and Morgan).  Fireworks\, great summer food and live entertainment highlight Elba’s Let Freedom Ring celebration on the Court Square in Elba.  Visitors and citizens will enjoy old-fashion fun at this AL America250 Independence Day event and firework show.WHAT: Elba will host a community evening to celebrate America’s Independence Day.WHO: Elba Chamber of CommerceWHERE: 230 Court Avenue\, Elba\, AL 36323 (Court Square) WHEN: Saturday\, July 2 – 6:30 p.m. –  9:30 p.m.WHY: Elba will continue the traditions set forth by our nation’s founding fathers during the first Fourth of July celebration.   Why does America commemorate Independence Day the way that we do?

Because John Adams wanted Americans to celebrate from 1776 forward. Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed\, Adams envisioned how the country would celebrate the festivities. In a letter to Abigail Adams on July 3\, 1776\, he wrote that the occasion should be commemorated “with Parade\, with Shews\, Games\, Bells\, and Illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” The first commemorative Independence Day was celebrated with a parade\, entertainment\, games\, fireworks on July 4\, 1777 and ended with the ringing of the Church bells.Elba is continuing this tradition. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a walking parade starting at the Mural and continuing around the Square. There will be professional entertainment by Crews Wright and her band. Elba’s Masonic Lodge is sponsoring free watermelon slices and family’s will enjoy participating in sack races\, watermelon eating\, and seed spitting contests. The festival will food vendors and will conclude with a fireworks display and the ringing of church bells.Elba invites everyone to join us for a traditional Red\, White\, and Boom as recommended by John Adams in 1776 to celebrate America’s 250th birthday!
