SUMMARY:BCHGS Quarterly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Butler County Historical & Genealogical Society for our April Quarterly Meeting at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library on Sunday\, April 26 at 2:00. \n\n\n\nWe are proud to host the launch party for Historic Resting Places of Alabama: Cemeteries and Graveyards Around the State by BCHGS member Mollie Smith Waters. Waters is known online as “That Cemetery Lady.” She is a popular college instructor at LBW Community College in Greenville. \n\n\n\nAlabama is full of old cemeteries\, and while they are places to pay respect for the departed\, they are also repositories of the beauty and history that capture the story of the state’s rich and diverse culture. Each Alabama county is represented in the book with at least one cemetery that has something unique to teach its visitors. Alabama’s cemeteries are truly wonderful places to explore. \n\n\n\nWaters will give a presentation about her travels finding the perfect cemeteries and photos to feature in the book. She has many interesting and amusing stories to share about her adventures. Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a signed copy of this fabulous book! SUMMARY:We the Readers - The Grapes of Wrath
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence this year at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library with a search for The Great American Novel. \n\n\n\nThis month we are reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. First published in 1939\, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize–winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family\, the Joads\, driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into haves and have-nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision\, elemental yet plainspoken\, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless\, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice\, and of one woman’s stoical strength\, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes the very nature of equality and justice in America. As Don DeLillo has claimed\, Steinbeck “shaped a geography of conscience” with this novel where “there is something at stake in every sentence.” Beyond that—for emotional urgency\, evocative power\, sustained impact\, prophetic reach\, and continued controversy—The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the most American of American classics.
