SUMMARY:We the Readers - The Color Purple
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence this year at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library with a search for The Great American Novel. \n\n\n\nThis month we are reading The Color Purple by Alice Walker\, published 1982. \n\n\n\nCelie has grown up poor in rural Georgia\, despised by the society around her and abused by her own family. She strives to protect her sister\, Nettie\, from a similar fate\, and while Nettie escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa\, Celie is left behind without her best friend and confidante\, married off to an older suitor\, and sentenced to a life alone with a harsh and brutal husband. \n\n\n\nIn an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear\, Celie begins writing letters directly to God. The letters\, spanning 20 years\, record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment guided by the light of a few strong women. She meets Shug Avery\, her husband’s mistress and a jazz singer with a zest for life\, and her stepson’s wife\, Sofia\, who challenges her to fight for independence. And though the many letters from Celie’s sister are hidden by her husband\, Nettie’s unwavering support will prove to be the most breathtaking of all.

SUMMARY:Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with Niki Sepsas: A Means to an End: Privateers in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This history series with Niki Sepsas tells the remarkable story of American Independence celebrating our 250th anniversary. Provided through a grant from America 250 Alabama. \n\n\n\nRealizing that America’s rebellious colonies were in no position to challenge Britain’s Royal Navy and its rule of the seas\, the Continental Congress in 1776 began commissioning private vessels to harass British shipping. SUMMARY:Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with Niki Sepsas: Birth of the “Stars and Stripes” & the Star Spangled Banner
DESCRIPTION:This history series with Niki Sepsas tells the remarkable story of American Independence celebrating our 250th anniversary. Provided through a grant from America 250 Alabama. \n\n\n\nHow did a seamstress from New Jersey (the eighth of her parents’ 17 children!) help George Washington re-design a flag that would become the banner for the fledgling Continental Army in 1776? How many times has the American flag changed over the years? And what led a Georgetown lawyer to pen 36 lines of poetry while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 become our national anthem? This program highlights the birth of our flag and our national anthem.
