DESCRIPTION:The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area has opened its annual photo contest after a two-year hiatus – and there are new twists.“We’ve had so many great entries in past years that we wanted to offer our local photographers something new\,” said MSNHA Program Director Jessie Johnson. “We hope these changes— adding the theme ‘Landmarks & Legacies\,’ emphasizing creativity and giving photographers a long window of opportunity — will get our entrants excited about going in a different direction. We’re especially delighted to connect this year’s photo contest with America250\, the initiative to celebrate and commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial.”In addition\, winning and other selected submissions will be featured in an exhibit co-hosted by Florence Arts and Museums\, Oct. 12-Nov. 13.Entries can be submitted digitally at MSNHA’s website\, https://msnha.una.edu/. Deadline is Friday\, Aug. 28. Photos must be taken within the past 18 months in one of MSNHA’s six counties (Colbert\, Franklin\, Lauderdale\, Lawrence\, Limestone and Morgan). Guidelines and the submission form are at https://msnha.una.edu/.“We wanted our theme to be dynamic and flexible enough to inspire creativity. We also wanted to help entrants share their stories of meaningful places and people\,” Johnson said. “Even though Alabama was not a state 250 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was signed\, we hope our entrants can capture the spirit of America’s beginnings through this year’s ‘Landmarks and Legacy’ theme. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence this year at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library with a search for The Great American Novel. \n\n\n\nThis month we are reading The Color Purple by Alice Walker\, published 1982. \n\n\n\nCelie has grown up poor in rural Georgia\, despised by the society around her and abused by her own family. She strives to protect her sister\, Nettie\, from a similar fate\, and while Nettie escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa\, Celie is left behind without her best friend and confidante\, married off to an older suitor\, and sentenced to a life alone with a harsh and brutal husband.  \n\n\n\nIn an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear\, Celie begins writing letters directly to God. The letters\, spanning 20 years\, record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment guided by the light of a few strong women. She meets Shug Avery\, her husband’s mistress and a jazz singer with a zest for life\, and her stepson’s wife\, Sofia\, who challenges her to fight for independence. And though the many letters from Celie’s sister are hidden by her husband\, Nettie’s unwavering support will prove to be the most breathtaking of all.
