“Expressions of Freedom” America 250 Alabama Arty Contest

The America 250 Alabama Commission is excited to announce the launch of the Expressions of Freedom Art Contest, a statewide creative competition celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. Students, teachers, artists, and community members across Alabama are invited to take part in this historic opportunity.

The contest encourages Alabamians to explore the theme: “Expressions of Freedom — 250 Years of the American Story”

Participants may submit original work in one of three categories: painting, poetry, or original song. Winners in each category and age division will receive a $250 prize and will be featured at Sweet Home 250, the official state July 4 celebration held July 3–4, 2026, at the American Village in Montevallo.


Eligibility

  • Alabama residents only
  • Two age divisions:
    • Youth (15 & under)
    • Adult (16+)

Key Dates

  • Submission Deadline: April 30, 2026
  • Finalists Announced: June 5, 2026
  • Exhibition & Awards: July 3–4, 2026

Contest Categories

Painting

  • Media: Acrylic, oil, watercolor, or mixed media
  • Max size: 24” x 36”
  • Submission includes 3 photos + short artist statement

Poetry

  • Up to 40 lines (or 500 words for prose poetry)
  • Submit as PDF or DOCX

Original Song

  • 3–4 minutes, MP3 or WAV
  • Include lyric sheet (score optional)
