50 Alabama Cities Named America 250 Alabama Semiquincentennial Cities

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission has announced that the first 50 cities, towns, and municipalities across the state have been designated as official America 250 Alabama Semiquincentennial Cities, recognizing their commitment to celebrating the nation’s founding and strengthening civic engagement in their communities.

The Semiquincentennial City initiative is ongoing, and organizers emphasize that these first 50 communities represent only the beginning of a statewide effort. Additional Alabama municipalities are encouraged to join the initiative as preparations continue for the nation’s historic milestone in 2026.

The program encourages cities and towns throughout Alabama to commemorate America’s 250th birthday by promoting patriotism, civic duty, and a deeper understanding of American history and democratic principles. Communities that receive the designation commit to highlighting the importance of citizenship through local programs, events, and partnerships. They each receive an America 250 Alabama flag to raise over their City Hall, Chamber of Commerce, or municipal building of their choice.

“As we approach this historic milestone, it is an ideal moment for communities across Alabama to place renewed focus on the values that define our nation,” said Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Executive Officer Natalie Steed. “By encouraging residents to learn more about American history, the principles of democracy, and the responsibilities of citizenship, we can help foster a deeper appreciation for the ideals that shaped both our state and our country.”

Cities recognized as Semiquincentennial Cities are encouraged to develop initiatives such as educational programs, public celebrations, and legacy projects tied to the 250th anniversary. These activities are designed to inspire pride in local communities while helping residents understand their role in preserving the nation’s founding values.

Making patriotism and civic responsibility central to local programs and community events can also encourage citizens to take part in civic engagement and learn the importance of being informed participants in the democratic process.

The initiative also promotes partnerships with local veterans, public servants, educators, and civic organizations to provide meaningful opportunities for residents—especially young people—to engage with the history and responsibilities of citizenship. Organizers hope this comprehensive approach will help instill a deeper respect for the nation’s past while inspiring a renewed commitment to its future.
